Welcome to Eric Folkerth's blog!

Eric's Top 25 iPod Songs for 2007

It's the last week of the year, that means that it's "End of the Year List" time.

As per with last year, there's just one I'll offer you. It's the list of songs below which --for whatever it's worth-- ended up as the most played songs on my iPod this year. I know this, because I intentionally reset the song count on my iTunes somewhere during the first week of last January.

It's a fun exercise, actually. I highly recommend giving it a shot. Because it gives you a little musical snapshot of your year...the things that were happening...what you were going through.

In the case of these songs, there are only two or three that ever got any airplay as "hits." (What does that say about me?!) You will also note that although this is advertised as a "Top 25," there are
not twenty-five entries. Apparently, this is because iTunes will not include songs that are not also for sale at their store. Which is really just as well...since the most of the excluded ones are demos of my own songs and only got lots of plays just because I was listening for ways to improve them.

So, without further delay:

Christmas Lists: A Meditation

It's hard to tell just where we are with Santa this year. Maria and her parents are doing something of a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" dance with each other around all the major issues.

But she
did go to see him Saturday: (Read the rest. Click here)

Follow Up on Fogelberg

"Death is there to keep us honest,
and contantly remind us we are free."
--Dan Fogelberg

I'm feeling a mixture of sadness and embarrassment. It all has to do with what I blogged about Sunday night: the death of Dan Fogelberg.

Columbus Discovery

Columbus Discovery:

"An artist, musician, writer, cultural figure who Eric stumbles on as if he's the first person to ever know about them.

Like Columbus, he's usually thrilled to have "discovered" this new and creative talent. Like Columbus, he usually later realizes that many of these people have been known for years --thank you very much-- and are only "new" to him.

Given how many times this has happened, Eric no longer assumes anything, and simply generically calls these moments "Columbus Discoveries," confessing ahead of time that, while they are new to him, he might just be the last clueless person to learn about them."

Goodbye to Dan Fogelberg

I have just heard the news about Dan's death earlier today, and am still very much at a loss for words. I wrote this entry about Dan about two years ago. I probably don't have a lot more to say today about Dan beyond than this tribute to him, and I hope you'll consider giving it a read tonight. (Read the rest. Click here)

Our California Road Trip: Spring Break 2007

For months now, I've been wanting to blog about our Spring Break trip to California. I did manage to write about this part of the trip. But not the whole thing.

Today, I made a video of our pictures, and I've decided it pretty much tells the story better than I could.

Here you go:

Walking With My Feet Ten Feet Off of Beale

"Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain"

Got the chance to go to Memphis a while back, and I've been wanting to blog about it since. I'd been through Memphis many times, on the way to Kentucky to visit the grandparents. But I don't believe we ever stopped on any of those trips. I knew Memphis was the home of the blues. I knew MLK was shot there. I knew Graceland was there too. But that's about it. What I didn't realize ahead of time is what an incredibly cool, and very historical, town it is. In Memphis, you can learn a lot about the last hundred years of our country's domestic history, and you can learn just about everything you need to know about our musical history in any age.

Maria's Grocerystore Birthday Dance

We gave Maria one of those cool new iPod Nanos for her birthday in September. I spent a couple of days loading it up with all her favorite Hannah Montana, and High School musical songs.

When you're ten, birthdays are still a big deal. You remember, don't you? Remember thinking it was probably the most special day of the year.

So, on Maria's birthday, we were shopping at Albertson's, and she had on the new iPod. What she didn't know is that I had my Treo, and I was taking movies.

Happy

Here's just a small portion of Maria's Birthday Grocerystore Dance:

My Immigration Blog Gets Republished

Dallas Area Progressive Christian Alliance is a small group of dedicated believers who happen to believe that not only can you be liberal/progressive and be a Christian, but that the Gospel perhaps even indicates a kind of progressivism that many do not typically associate with the faith They seek to stand as a counter to the pervasiveness of the "religious right" and offer people an alternative.

Back in April of 2006, I preached a sermon on the morning of the "MegaMarch." The DAPCA is currently unpacking the issue of immigration, and they have republished this sermon on their website. You can read it
